Schaeffler Project & Technology Center Bühl

Starting into the electrified future
Schaeffler AG has created a Project & Technology Center in Bühl with a three-part expansion designed by Wurm und Wurm Architekten. Four hundred employees are working here on the mobility of tomorrow. A striking bridge measuring 53 meters in length and 12 meters in width spans Bußmatten Street, connecting not only the two new buildings but symbolically uniting the entire Project & Technology Center. It stands for collaboration, communication, and connectivity. The barrier-free buildings offer a total of 15,000 square meters of state-of-the-art work environments for interdisciplinary cooperation. Communication zones, networking areas, laboratory and workshop spaces, gravity points, bookable meeting rooms, a rooftop terrace, and a test track support an open and transparent working culture. At the same time, access to information and technical expertise is restricted to authorized personnel only.

The spatial layout was realized using feco system glass walls. In the foyer, a 4.94-meter-high fecoplan glass wall with access control ensures separation. The frameless glass construction with 12 mm toughened safety glass (ESG) and a sound insulation rating of Rw,P = 37 dB, as well as 16 mm laminated safety glass (VSG-SI) with Rw,P = 42 dB, offers transparency while ensuring acoustic protection in offices and meeting rooms. In the executive area, rooms with increased sound insulation requirements are used. Here, flush double glazing fecofix with Rw,P = 47 dB ensures acoustic discretion. Solid walls of the type fecowall with sound-absorbing surfaces further enhance the room acoustics. The wooden door elements fecodoor H70 manufactured by feco can be equipped with acoustically effective slot perforations on the room-facing side if required. The multi-storey reception hall also features wall cladding made of oak-veneered, low-emission wood core panels from the fecophon series, with vertical slotting (14/2 mm), used as pre-wall coverings. These wall panels reach heights of up to 6.84 meters and were implemented with image-based layout planning. Integrated wardrobes with sliding doors and locker cabinets complete the concept.

A special highlight in the reception hall is the suspended meeting cubes glazed with fecoplan’s fall-proof and smoke-tight all-glass construction. These provide impressive spaces for meetings and presentations. Magnetic, writable whiteboards made of color-coated steel support agile working methods. The new competence center is aiming for Gold Certification from the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB). With low-emission, certified wood-based materials and system walls that can be relocated without structural damage, feco makes an important contribution to sustainability. The combination of glass and wood in the system wall solutions highlights the open, communicative nature of the interior design. The result is a high-quality building architecture that attracts talent to help shape the future of electromobility.
